The Tolhouse has certainly had a turbulent history. Built about 800 years ago it has been home to pirates, robbers and murderers as well as countless common crooks and witches! It has been attacked by rebels and rioters and gutted by enemy bombs.
An infamous witch-finder general, Matthew Hopkins came to Yarmouth in 1645. Most people in the 17th century, even the educated, believed in witchcraft. Matthew Hopkins made a fine living for a few years finding witches, torturing them to get a confession and then seeing them tried. Several Yarmouth women were tried here, found guilty and hanged. Hopkins bloody reign was short-lived as he died two years later.
The Tolhouse was originally built as a house, soon passed into the hands of Yarmouth officials where is was used as a courtroom and the town Gaol. It has a dungeon known as ‘The Hold’ and was once a police station.
The torture and punishments that took place in the building have caused lost souls to wonder. There have been many reports of paranormal activity, the most common reports are apparitions being seen walking around the jail. There are even reports of visitors being scratched and ghostly groans and moans.
